The bay of San Juan de Luz is located at the bottom of the Bay of Biscay, on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea. It belongs to France, although it is next to Spain, about 10 kilometers from the border.

Saint Jean de Luz is an ideal place to discover the French Basque Country. So spending a day there is a fabulous idea.

THE OLD TOWN

Saint Jean de Luz is 20 minutes from Biarritz, however, the atmosphere in Saint Jean de Luz is completely different from Biarritz. In THE OLD TOWN you can see beautiful Basque-style houses. Many of the buildings date from the 17th century, a time when Saint Jean de Luz was one of the most important fishing ports in France.

Grande playe

If the French city of Saint Jean de Luz or San Juan de Luz stands out for something, it is for its long and beautiful beach, known as Playa Grande, la Grande Plage. A beautiful crescent-shaped beach with hardly any waves, an ideal plan to do with the family is go there and spend the day at the beach.

Promenade

Another beautiful place in Saint Jean de Luz is its promenade, known as the Promenade. The beachfront houses are spectacular, many of these houses being from the 17th century.

Port

Also one of the most typical places to see in Saint Jean de Luz is its port, with its boats and its many fish and seafood restaurants. It is a very busy area, perfect for taking photos or buying them as souvenirs.

Rue Gambetta

Then there is the well-known pedestrianized street Rue Gambetta. A very and busy street where you can find cute shops, local products, souvenirs …

One of the most spectacular views is the one you get watching the waves crash against the levee. There you can also see the rock formations on the water known as Flysch, which can be seen in Deba, Zumaia, Biarritz … they are incredible!
