1. Take a stroll in Cristina Enea Park

You won’t be short of activities to keep you busy in San Sebastián. In fact, you don’t even have to leave the centre of town to find yourself surrounded by nature: the Cristina Enea Park is a unique space full of surprises.

This green space extends to almost 100,000 square metres along the banks of the River Urumea, here you’ll find numerous tree species, many of them native to the area. The Cristina Enea Park is home to a gigantic red sequoia, native to the United States. You can also go in search of amphibians such as the common midwife toad or photograph elegant birdlife, including the resident peacocks.

2. Visit the Museum of San Telmo

Take a trip to this fascinating museum to discover more about Basque culture. A variety of exhibitions focus on some of the region’s most important historic moments, helping visitors to better understand Basque customs and traditions. The museum itself forms part of the region’s history, as it was the Basque Country’s first to open its doors to the public.

If you’re a fan of beautiful architecture, make sure to pay the museum a visit. The building was constructed nearly five centuries ago, between the years 1544 and 1562. In the past, its many rooms and wings were occupied by Dominican friars. The building’s architecture mixes both Gothic and Renaissance styles.

3. The Basilica of Santa María del Coro

This church is one of the most visited—and also the oldest—in the area. Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Romanesque church, the building displays a predominantly Baroque facade, combined with elements from other architectural styles such as a plateresque portico. Its construction dates back to the second half of the eighteenth century and it is home to one of the Basque Country’s most impressive choirs.

Every year on the 14th of August it’s even possible to listen live to the Donostia Choir during the festivities of the Virgen del Coro, patron saint of the city of San Sebastián.

4. The port of San Sebastián

The port of San Sebastián is located at the far end of the Bay of La Concha, one of Euskadi’s biggest beaches. The port’s facilities are divided into two distinct zones: the first is dedicated to fishing activities, while the second is reserved for water sport lovers.

If you’re passing by, make sure to stop off at La Kofradia, a restaurant located in the city’s old fish market. Close by you’ll also find San Sebastian’s Aquarium, located just behind the port. Venture inside and you’ll have the chance to experience the area’s marine wildlife first-hand, and have a thoroughly enjoyable and educational visit.

5. Island of Santa Clara Beach

This small island is located in the middle of the Bay of La Concha and can be accessed quickly and easily by speedboats which leave directly from the city itself. Enjoy a day of rest and relaxation by the sea at this small, quiet beach, with its calm waters and tranquil atmosphere.

Few tourists visit this haven of calm.

6. Take a different kind of dip

Chilling out at a spa in San Sebastián is within your reach. One of the city’s most prestigious institutions is the La Perla thalassotherapy centre. Inside you’ll find a wide variety of modern, up-to-date facilities. Take time to relax and enjoy the centre’s spa circuit or, if you prefer, take part in an enjoyable aqua-gym class.

Not only does this spa offer the peace and calm you need to disconnect from your daily routine, but you are also welcome to bring your children with you. The centre offers swimming classes for both children and babies, helping little ones to take to the water with ease. What’s more, you’ll also be able to take advantage of the centre’s comprehensive gym facilities.
