Where is the Basque Country and what is it known for?
The Basque Country is an autonomous community located in the north of Spain, along the coast of the Cantabrian Sea. It is made up of the provinces of Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia and Araba, on the border of France. This land has its own language, Basque, an official language along with Catalan.
It owes its popularity to its cosmopolitan cities, which combine tradition and modernity, but also to its internationally renowned cuisine, with many restaurants that have been awarded Michelin stars. And its large-scale cultural events also deserve a mention, most notably the San Sebastián International Film Festival. It is also world-famous for attractions such as the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum.
What to see in the Basque Country These are its main attractions
When you travel to the Basque autonomous community, take advantage of the opportunity to visit some of its main attractions, so you can enjoy a wide range of experiences during your stay. All you need to know is what to see in the Basque Country to make the most of your getaway.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
This islet located off the coast of Biscay, in the town of Bermeo, is one destination that you cannot miss. Make your way up the 240 steps leading to the hermitage that crowns its hilltop. According to legend, if you touch its bell three times, your wish will be granted.
Don’t be surprised if this sea-defying stone fortress looks familiar, as it was chosen as a backdrop for the seventh season of Game of Thrones.
Pasai Donibane, the little Basque Venice
The small town of Pasaia in Gipuzkoa is one of the most beautiful in Spain. It is divided by the mouth of the river, but you can take a motorboat to travel between the Pasai San Pedro and Pasai Donibane banks. The latter is made up of a row of fisherman’s houses, with their foundations submerged in the sea. At high tide, the water enters the square and the cobbled street, the only one in the old town.
Pintxos in the Old Town of San Sebastián
This is another thing to see in the Basque Country, or, rather, to taste. Pintxos, or tapas, cover the counters in bars, such as those in the Old Town of San Sebastián. Among them you will find the popular Gilda, which is made up of an anchovy, an olive and a chilli, and is named in honour of the film with the same name. This will be featured alongside various other innovative miniature culinary creations.
The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum
If there is one building that will leave you awestruck in the Basque Country, it is the Guggenheim Museum. Take advantage of your visit to the capital of Biscay to discover this creation by the architect Frank Gehry. Its exterior, made of titanium plates, is as spectacular as the exhibits housed inside. It contains around twenty different galleries. It also is top of the museum rankings in Spain for its exhibition surface area, with 24,000 square metres.
Valderejo Natural Park
Located at the westernmost point of the province of Alava, Valderejo was declared a Natural Park in 1992. It is almost 3,500 square metres in size and is home to a diverse range of species of flora and fauna. If you’re lucky, you might spot a golden eagle or a wildcat. Alongside the beautiful landscape, mankind also left its mark in the form of ancient megalithic monuments. Discover this paradise by following one of its hiking or mountain biking trails.
